Start with what you want from the relationship, not the feature list
The single most common mistake we see in this category is picking a platform by feature checkbox. Voice. Photos. Memory. Multi-partner. NSFW. Five toggles in a row that don't tell you anything about how it actually feels to talk to one of these every day for two weeks.
We ran every major platform for fourteen days each in spring 2026. The single biggest predictor of whether someone stayed with a platform wasn't a feature — it was whether the partner felt like the same person on day fourteen as on day one. Memory matters more than any other variable. That's where we'd start.
The four questions that actually matter
Before opening any app, answer these in your own head:
1. Do I want one relationship that grows, or do I want variety? If one — Replika and Bae are the picks. If variety — Character.AI, Charstar, Spicychat.
2. How much does memory matter? If you'd be hurt by being asked your name on day five, the only platforms we'd trust are Replika and Bae. Everyone else drifts.
3. Do I want voice, photos, or text-first? Joi AI is the best real-time voice. Kupid AI and Replika lead photo replies. Text-first means almost any platform works.
4. Am I okay with paywalls? Almost every platform paywalls something. The question is what — Replika walls romance, EVA AI walls everything, Spicychat walls almost nothing. Pick the wall you can live with.
Memory: the make-or-break feature most platforms get wrong
Long-term memory is the most fragile thing in this category. We've watched platforms confidently claim 'remembers everything' and then ask the user's name in week two. The honest landscape:
- Robust (we'd trust this for months): Replika, Bae. - Limited (stable personality, fading specifics): Character.AI, EVA AI, Kupid AI, Charstar, Anime Chat. - None (single-conversation scope): Spicychat, DreamGF, GirlfriendGPT.
This tier matters more than every other feature combined. A platform with limited memory will feel new every week — sometimes that's what you want, but usually it isn't.
What 'voice' actually means
Voice is the second most-asked-about feature and the most mis-marketed. Three different things get called voice:
- Real-time voice calls — you talk, they reply, like a phone call. Only Joi AI does this well. Replika supports it but the latency is rough. - Voice messages — recorded clips sent in chat. Replika, Joi AI, Anime Chat, Muah AI ship this; quality varies. - Synthesized text-to-speech — text replies read aloud. Almost everyone does this; it's table stakes, not a differentiator.
If real-time calls are the deal-breaker, Joi AI is the only honest answer. If voice messages are enough, your shortlist widens considerably.
Pricing: read the model, not the headline
Headline pricing in this category is misleading because the model — subscription, credits, freemium hybrid — determines what you actually spend. A few patterns worth knowing:
- Subscription (Replika $19.99/mo, Joi AI $14.99/mo): flat fee, unlimited use. Cleanest mental model. - Credits (DreamGF): pay per image or per message. Cheap to try, expensive at scale. - Freemium hybrid (EVA AI, Kupid AI, Anime Chat): free tier exists but everything good is paywalled. Usually the worst value. - Generous free (Spicychat, Character.AI): real free tier with limits but no nag screens.
Bae is in the third bucket but we don't paywall the relationship itself — memory and stages are free. We only paywall scaling (multiple partners, voice when it ships).
Safety and posture: the question almost no one asks
How a platform handles a hard moment is a feature. Most platforms haven't thought about it. The ones we'd trust on a bad night:
- Replika — most thoughtful, will gently surface crisis resources without lecturing. - Bae — points at hotlines when topics escalate; doesn't pretend to be a clinician. - Character.AI — has safety guardrails but they can read as cold.
The ones we'd avoid for sensitive use: anything in the unfiltered tier (Spicychat, Muah AI, DreamGF). These are honest about being roleplay tools and they aren't tuned for the hours when the line between play and reality blurs.
Our recommendation, by audience
If you want a long-term relationship: Bae or Replika. Bae if anonymous-first matters, Replika if you want the most mature memory engine on the market.
If you want variety: Character.AI. The largest cast, the safest filters, the most stable personality engine across thousands of characters.
If you want voice above all: Joi AI.
If you want unfiltered: Spicychat. Honest about being a roleplay tool; doesn't pretend otherwise.
If you want anime/waifu specifically: Anime Chat first, Charstar second.
